The current container port in Nuuk has long been too small, and therefore Greenland’s government Naalakkersuisut – this week said yes to a new port, at an expected cost of more than 600 million DKK.
The new port will be completed in 2016, and must either be financed by a fully government owned company, or in cooperation with the Municipality of Sermersooq (Nuuk), Port of Aalborg (Denmark) and Royal Arctic Line.
– A new port of Nuuk will affect the whole of Greenland, says Jacob Strøm, Communications Manager at Royal Arctic Line.
– A new and more efficient port means a more efficient infrastructure, where ships can be loaded and unloaded quickly, he explains.

Environment friendly
– It allows you to sail with larger and more efficient vessels. And with less time in port, we can spend a little more time sailing on the coast, without compromising the sailing schedule.
– This means fuel consumption can be reduced, and thereby reducing the climate impact, says Jakob Strøm.
Potential
– A larger port also provides the opportunity to attract new customers when they are offered more space.
– A company such as Arctic Base Supply, will be able to offer even better logistic solutions to customers in offshore and mining.

Huge demand
– It is important to stress that Royal Arctic Line’s requirements for a new port is the normal container cargo.
– The development of cargo volumes, makes an urgent need for an new port.

Other Enhancements
– The expansion in Nuuk is fortunately not the only future one, and the local expansion of the port of Sisimiut is also a great improvement.
– The same with a possible extension in Ilulissat, and Royal Arctic Line continues to support this.
– But right now, we are pleased that all of Greenland seems to get a large an modern hub port of Nuuk, says Jakob Strøm.

Improvement for tourism
– A new port will have a positive effect on Nuuk as cruise city when the port is completed, as it often – if not always – will be able to offer the ships berth, says Malik Milfeldt from Visit Greenland.
– It is both a great advantage with bunkering, filling fuel and water tanks, and also makes it much easier to handle passengers.

– This allows passengers to stay longer on shore, and hopefully buying more, which we as tourist boards are interested in, says Malik Milfeldt from Visit Greenland.
