Expert in communication and lifestyle Henrik Byager is a member of the Knud Rasmussens College Friends, and went to visit the College in Sisimiut. He wants to share his positive experiences and encurage others to become member:
Wellbalanced young people
I immediately notice the calm and relaxed atmosphere at Knud Rasmussen’s College (KRH): the lives of the young people seem to be well-balanced. They have fun and get on well with each other, there is a good energy.
School difficult conditions
This impression lasts for my entire stay. There are the warm-hearted members of staff, who believe in the cause, despite having to fight against difficult conditions. There is a tight economy, too few members of staff and the worn equipment and buildings. The school really needs refurbishment in places.
A proud city
All over town I am received with curiosity and kindness on a personal level. It is quickly apparent that the people of Sisimiut are very proud of their town and their country, in that order. Sisimiut is clearly a beautiful and most dynamic place.
The building and construction school are »Paradise«
There is progress here and the money to provide some of the finest school facilities I have ever seen. They are concentrated around the areas that are moving fast these years, arctic engineering in cooperation with DTU and mining professions.
A tough fight
The main impression from my meeting with Greenlanders is, that it is extremely easy to connect with them on a personal level and that this is what one should do. This is absolutely wonderful. The tour erases a load of my own prejudices and guilt with regard to Greenland. They will manage all right, all by themselves.
No money to development
The college is a part of Sisimiut and the identity of the town. Everyone speaks well of the college, the management, the pupils and the results. This is a fantastic foundation on which to build. On the other hand, it is also my impression that KRH has been under economic pressure in recent years, that there hasn’t been any surplus for development. The focus has been on survival, to provide satisfactory teaching.
A challenge
The college and its employees do a great job under difficult conditions, no doubt about it. The future of KRH will present a huge challenge, but nothing is impossible. I hope I can make a contribution and I would like to return.
