To run a business under Arctic conditions in a sparsely populated country the size of Western Europe are the conditions for Mittarfeqarfiit – Greenland’s airports authority, which handled more than 400,000 passengers in 2012.
The company is owned by Greenland’s government and it is governed by the regulations of the Danish Transport Authority. Since 1988, the company has handled the operation of Greenland’s airports since 1988
Work, safety and training
The work at Greenland’s airports concerns the provision of services for air traffic in a responsible and safe way: they work with maintenance of the machinery, services of the aircrafts plus a wide range of other functions that are required to run an airport.
There are emergency services at all the airports during opening hours. Fire and rescue service is an important function that determines the size of the aircraft the airport can receive.
At Mittarfeqarfiit there are about 10 new trainees and interns each year, for a wide range of jobs that takes place in the company from security personnel, AFIS for work in the towers, sea rescue, fire fighters and commanders are also trained.

Challenges
Mittarfeqarfiit is a relatively large company and in the future there may be even more airports.
– This is a political decision with which we won’t interfere, but we will be ready to run the airports, says the director.
The future
– We will definitely succeed in becoming a better and more efficient company, because most of our employees are prepared for changes.
– I see a challenge in the opportunity to make a difference, ends director Jens Rechnagel Lauridsen.
Business development
Sven Christiansen is Business Development Manager and is working to find new areas of business and looking after existing customers.
– We went to the mining industry’s trade show, PDAC in Canada, to see how things are done in other countries, states Sven Christiansen, who see a great potential in servicing the mining companies.
– It is exciting to help to find new working methods and to develop ideas for end products such as the special security check of people working on cruise ships and oil platforms.
– We are making progress and I don’t have many days that are similar, states Sven Christiansen.
