Nuuk

The capital of Greenland with the Greenlandic Parliament, University, Climate Institute and Institute of Natural Resources. 

 
One City - three districts
Nuuk consists of three major districts - initially separated by mountains - now combined by roads and a tunnel.

The center of Nuuk is the old part of town which has been inhabited for centuries. Here are most shops, Nuuk Shopping Mall, cafes, restaurants, hotels, public institutions and the Parliament - Inatsisartut.
 
Here you also find the Atlantic harbor, the old colonial port, the national museum and Nuuk Art Museum.

Nuussuaq district which was established in the late 1970s and onwards, is the second largest. Here you find Nuuk marina and the public swim »Malik«.
 
Qinngorput district are the newest and most modern district. The first homes were inhabited in 2003, and it is expected that the area will continue to grow for many years.

Nuuk's nature
Nuup Kangerlua - Fjord system that extends from Nuuk to the ice cap around 100 km. from the Capital.
 
Ameralik - United inlet south of Nuuk.
 
Sermitsiaq - Characteristic mountain is often used as Nuuk's landmark.
 
Quassusuaq - small mountain behind Nuuk Airport with skilift during winter.
  
Ukkusissat - big mountain next to Qinngorput is a daytrip for hiking, with a unique view of the entire Nuuk from the top.
   
Kangerluarsunnguaq - is a small inlet that can be reached by boat or by hiking from Nuuk. Here is a small glacier, where the highly experienced can ski and snowboard all year.

Schools 
Nuuk has five elementary schools. Ukaliusaq school (USK) and Atuarfik Samuel Kleinschmidt (ASK) is located in the city center, and Nuussuup Atuarfia and Kangillinnguit atuarfiat located in Nuussuaq the Free School is also located. The fifth is Atuarfik Hans Lynge, located in the new district Qinngorput.

Greenland's public high school, trade school and technical college.

Higher education
Greenland's Teachers College, Ilinniarfissuaq is Greenland's oldest educational institution.
 
University of Greenland, University of Greenland, Ilisimatusarfik offering - undergraduate and graduate education. The university has four departments within Theology, Department of Language, Literature & Media, Department of Administration and the Department of Culture and Social History.

The Iron and Metal school with education for blacksmiths, machinists, ship fitters, vehicle mechanics, terminal workers, electricians, electrical, electronics, automation, office machine, radio-  or computer engineer.
 
Center for Health, Peqqissaaernermik Ilinniarfik educates nurses and health assistants.
  
Moreover the Art School, School for Social Workers, School of Journalism, The Drama School and the Police Academy is also located in Nuuk.

Nuuk's history
Officially founded in 1728 by the priest Hans Egede, but used by the Greenlanders as a settlement for many years before that.
 
Nuuk means headland, as the city is situated at the edge of a headland, surrounded by water on three sides. In colonial times the city was called Godthaab in Danish, and the name appearss still on older maps.
