A new association called »World Of Wonder« (WOW) will create more tourism products in South Greenland through private initiatives. At first, they focus on building a lookout point in Qaqortoq city that will provide guests an extra free experience.

- That this project is a priority as the first, is because it is relatively easily achieved, says promoter and Hotel Manager Jim Riis. The others in WOW are tourism chief Edda Lyberth, museum director Ole G. Jensen and tourism developer with Sulisartut Hojskoliat Eigil Kielsen-Davidson.

Greenland's longest stairway
The project involves the construction of a lookout point on a mountain top called Peters Varde, almost in middle of town. Many towns in Greenland are privileged to have a top with a fantastic view. But only in Qaqortoq they have it in the center of town.

You can drive most of the way, and need only walk the last 100 meters up there. Here are planned what they think is Greenland's longest staircase with approx. 400 steps.

Part of the stunning views that could be enjoyed by many more from the new platform.

WOW - What a unique view ...
View point on Peter Varde will have a unique view of the fjord system and villages, and sea views where you almost can see the curvature of the ocean to one side, and the ice sheet to another when the weather permits.

You will also see the preserved Hvalsoe Church ruins, and have the city Qaqortoq for your feet when you stand up there.

Schedule
- The ideal is obviously to get the lookout spot ready for tourist season around 1'st June 2012, explains Jim Riis. But since we first have to collect money, we also work with a solution to build the lookout platform this year, and then the staircase next year. Depending on the goodwill of the project gets.

Kitaa Architects has sponsored the preliminary design stage. If the project is completed, it is agreed that they paid for a complete project and construction management.

Besides the construction is also an information board, and a giant telescope on the wish list.

A staircase in Greenland should be able to withstand wind and weather.

Inspiration for stair builders

From left to right:

Our Saviour's Church in Copenhagen, Denmark. 400 steps exactly.
Pine Mountain, Michigan, USA, 400 + steps.
Eiffel Tower, Paris, France. 1,665 steps.

World’s Longest Staircase run alongside the Niesenbahn to the 2,362m summit of Mount Niesen in the Swiss Alps, 11,674 steps.

The capital Nuuk already has a staircase to the Nuussuaq as one of the longest.

They are already good at building stairs in Qaqortoq.

In Maniitsoq is this staircase with approx. 210 steps.
