New mines around the world can challenge China's monopoly status on rare earths. Greenland is predicted to be among the largest producers, writes the Danish newspaper Berlingske Business Saturday.
China has for years been controlling the entire world production of rare earths. But new mining investments around the globe, are expected to reduce China's position of strength significantly towards the 2017th
American analysis
An analysis from American Technology Metals Research shows that the Chinese monopolistic status of rare earths are likely to be broken, and that Greenland may play an important role as one of the future major suppliers.
In 2010, China had 97 percent of world production of rare earths, but already in 2017 awaits the American research institute, the Chinese share could be under 50%, due to the large mining investments around the world.
At that time China will still be the world's largest producer, but the analysis expect Greenland could be among the world's other major rare earths producers, along with the U.S.
'Kvanefjeld', 'Kringlerne' and 'Sarfartoq', are some of the named Greenlandic projects who are estimated to contain large amounts of rare earths.
